Sodium is the main sweat loss

Extra sodium or potassium can be inappropriate with some heart, kidney or blood-pressure conditions.
What the research actually found
For daily life, electrolytes come from food. During prolonged heavy sweating, sodium is the electrolyte that usually matters most.
Taking 1,800 mg sodium produced 2.03% vs 2.27% dehydration, but did not improve performance or thermoregulation. More sodium is not automatically more useful.

Sweat losses vary widely. A salty sweater in tropical heat has a different problem from someone doing a 45-minute indoor workout.
Water and ordinary meals are usually enough unless heat and sweat are extreme.
A drink with sodium can improve fluid retention; use sweat history rather than a generic maximum dose.
Headache, confusion, vomiting or swelling after heavy fluid intake can be hyponatremia—not simple dehydration.

What holds up
During prolonged heavy sweating, fluid containing sodium can improve replacement and retention. For ordinary daily activity, a varied diet and water are usually sufficient.
What newer studies add
Current research is refining personalized sweat-rate and sweat-sodium testing, but consumer estimates and one-time tests do not perfectly predict needs in every environment.
What we cannot claim
There is no evidence that everyone needs daily electrolyte powder, nor that one sodium concentration is ideal for all bodies, sports and climates.
Why reasonable people can choose differently
Water is enough
For short or low-sweat activity and normal daily life, food replaces minerals and plain water usually handles fluid needs.
Add electrolytes
They can be useful during prolonged sweating, heat exposure, some illnesses or when a clinician has identified a need.
Match the drink to the loss. Use plain water for ordinary hydration and consider electrolytes when duration, heat and sweat—not marketing—make the case.

Muscle cramps are not always an electrolyte deficiency. Fatigue, training load, heat, nerve issues and other factors can contribute.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need electrolytes for a one-hour workout?+
Often not, especially in cool conditions with modest sweat. The answer changes with heat, intensity and the person.
Is coconut water a sports drink?+
It contains fluid and potassium but often less sodium than is lost in heavy sweat. It may or may not match the situation.
Are sugar-free electrolyte drinks better?+
Not automatically. Carbohydrate can be useful during long exercise; at other times it may be unnecessary. Context matters.
