Heart rate variability (HRV) describes variation in time between heartbeats. It changes with breathing, sleep, training, illness, alcohol and stress, but a wearable score is not a direct measurement of “readiness” or nervous-system health.

Use the same device, position and time—usually after waking. Do not compare your milliseconds with another person or between apps.

Measure on waking, same position, before caffeine, for the device’s recommended duration.

Analyze

Use a 7–28 day baseline and look for several abnormal days, not one dip.

Respond

If HRV falls with fatigue/illness, reduce intensity; if you feel well, one low score need not cancel training.

What is a good HRV?

There is no universal score. Your device, metric, age and baseline matter more than an internet percentile.

Why did alcohol lower it?

Alcohol commonly disrupts sleep and autonomic recovery, which many wearables detect as lower overnight HRV.

Can breathing raise HRV?

Slow breathing can change short-term HRV, but that does not automatically mean long-term fitness or health improved.
