Wearable pulse-rate variability underestimated ECG-derived HRV. rMSSD bias ranged about 2.85–4.39 ms and SDNN 7.23–11.84 ms across disease groups, with significant disagreement.

Use the same device, position and time—usually after waking. Do not compare your milliseconds with another person or between apps.
Measure on waking, same position, before caffeine, for the device’s recommended duration.
Use a 7–28 day baseline and look for several abnormal days, not one dip.
If HRV falls with fatigue/illness, reduce intensity; if you feel well, one low score need not cancel training.

What holds up
ECG is the reference method for beat-to-beat interval analysis. HRV responds to autonomic regulation and can change with recovery, breathing and illness.
What newer studies add
A 2025 comparison found that pulse-derived wearable variability can approximate some ECG measures under controlled conditions, but agreement depends on device and context.
What we cannot claim
Evidence does not support making major medical or training decisions from one proprietary readiness score. Algorithms are not fully transparent or interchangeable.

Daily HRV is noisy; sleep, mood, soreness and performance may be equally or more useful for recreational training.
