Numbers and decisions you can use

The useful question is not “high or low protein?” It is whether a higher intake changes hunger, training, lean tissue or adherence in the situation you are actually in.

Starting point

About 1.2–1.6 g/kg/day is a defensible working range during weight loss for a healthy, resistance-training adult.

Aggressive deficit / highly trained

Some trials use 1.6–2.4 g/kg/day, but the upper end is not proved necessary for most people.

Practical meal target

Roughly 25–40 g at 3–4 eating occasions is easier to execute than one protein-heavy dinner.

Weight loss commonly includes some lean-tissue loss. Adequate protein and resistance exercise are two practical tools used to reduce that risk.

  • Build each meal around a protein food plus produce or another fiber source.

  • Keep resistance training in the plan rather than relying on protein alone.

  • Track strength, energy and digestion—not only body weight.

  • Choose foods you can continue eating after the active weight-loss phase.

Common confusion

“Lean mass” on a scan includes water, organs and other non-fat tissue. A change is not automatically the same as losing functional skeletal muscle.

Frequently asked questions

Will protein stop all muscle loss?

No. It can reduce risk, but energy deficit size, exercise, age, illness and starting muscle mass all contribute.

Is a shake better than food?

Not inherently. Shakes can help when appetite or convenience is a barrier; foods may provide more variety and satiety.

Can plant proteins work?

Yes. Total intake, variety and amino-acid quality matter more than a simple plant-versus-animal label.
