VO2 max describes the highest rate at which the body can use oxygen during intense exercise. It is a powerful fitness marker, but a laboratory measurement and a wearable estimate are not the same thing.

An overview found high versus low cardiorespiratory fitness associated with 53% lower all-cause mortality. Each 1-MET higher fitness corresponded to 11–17% lower all-cause mortality and 18% lower heart-failure risk. Most evidence was observational.

Laboratory testing is best, watches estimate. The practical goal is a rising trend alongside better pace, power or walking tolerance.

Common confusion

VO2 max is not lung capacity. It measures oxygen use by the integrated body during exercise, not simply how much air the lungs can hold.

Is a watch estimate good enough?

It can be useful for personal trends, but it is not interchangeable with a supervised metabolic test.

Does age lower VO2 max?

Average values decline with age, but regular training and activity can preserve much more capacity than sedentary aging.

Is higher always better?

Higher fitness is generally favorable, but extreme training can bring injury, fatigue or cardiac concerns in susceptible people.
