What the research actually found
For healthy aging, strength is not cosmetic. It supports walking, balance, bone loading, independence and the ability to recover from illness.
A network meta-analysis found positive effects from machines (SMD 1.34), free weights (1.15), bands (0.93), mixed training (0.88) and body weight (0.71). Access and progression matter more than equipment prestige.

Machines, bands, free weights and body weight can all work. The common ingredient is effort that progresses over time.
2–3 sessions; 5–8 movements covering push, pull, squat, hinge, carry and calf/core work.
Finish most sets with roughly 1–3 good repetitions still possible.
When the top of the rep range is comfortable, add a little load or another repetition.

What holds up
Recent meta-analyses confirm that resistance training improves strength and physical function in older adults. U.S. guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activity at least two days weekly.
What newer studies add
Network reviews are comparing traditional strength, power-focused, multicomponent and supervised programs; different approaches may suit different limitations and goals.
What we cannot claim
No single set-and-repetition scheme is best for all older adults. Frailty, joint disease, balance, training history and supervision change the appropriate plan.
Why reasonable people can choose differently
Use heavier resistance
When technique and health allow, heavier loads can build strength efficiently and prepare the body for demanding tasks.
Use lighter resistance
Bands, machines and lighter loads can work when sets are challenging and may feel safer or more accessible.
Choose resistance you can control through a useful range. Progress gradually, train major movement patterns and seek supervision when confidence or safety is limited.

Practice a squat or sit-to-stand, push, pull, hinge, carry and calf movement as appropriate.

Finish most sets with good form before complete failure.

Age is not a reason to stop challenging muscle. It is a reason to scale the starting point and prioritize technique, recovery and progression.

No. Body weight, bands and household loads can work, although machines and free weights make progression easier.
Will strength training make joints worse?+
Appropriately scaled training often improves function. Acute or unexplained joint symptoms should be assessed and the movement modified.
