How to use the answer
One eGFR value is not the same as a kidney diagnosis
Chronic kidney disease requires persistence for at least three months or other evidence of kidney damage such as albuminuria. Trends, urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio and clinical context matter.
Creatinine equation
2021 CKD-EPIUses standardized creatinine, age and sex without a race coefficient.
Combined equation
Creatinine + cystatin CNIDDK and NKF note that the combined estimate is generally more accurate when both markers are available.
Non-GFR influences

Important limitations
What the number can—and cannot—tell you
Does eGFR below 60 always mean chronic kidney disease?+
No. CKD generally requires the finding to persist for at least three months or other markers of kidney damage. Acute illness can change creatinine quickly.
Why might this differ from my laboratory report?+
The report may use MDRD, the 2009 CKD-EPI equation, a different creatinine assay, rounding, or a pediatric equation. Use the laboratory's stated method.
Can this guide medication dosing?+
Not by itself. Drug labels may use different kidney-function estimates or absolute rather than body-surface-area-indexed values. Ask a pharmacist or prescriber.
